Hoop Conjecture and Black Holes on a Brane

چکیده
The initial data of gravity for a cylindrical matter distribution confined to a brane are studied in the framework of the single-brane Randall-Sundrum scenario. In this scenario, the 5-dimensional nature of gravity appears in the short-range gravitational interaction. We find that a sufficiently thin configuration of matter leads to the formation of a marginal surface, even if the configuration is infinitely long. This implies that the hoop conjecture proposed by Thorne does not hold on the brane: Even if a mass M does not become compacted into a region whose circumference C in every direction satisfies C > 4πGM , black holes with horizons can form in the Randall-Sundrum scenario.

Spherically Symmetric Solutions in a New Braneworld Massive Gravity Theory
In this paper, a combination of the braneworld scenario and covariant de Rham-Gabadadze-Tolley (dRGT) massive Gravity theory is proposed. In this setup, the five-dimensional bulk graviton is considered to be massive. The five dimensional nonlinear ghost-free massive gravity theory affects the 3-brane dynamics and the gravitational potential on the brane. Following the solutions with spherical s...
متن کاملYITP-98-12, gr-qc/9904054 Apparent Horizon Formation and Hoop Conjecture in Non-axisymmetric Spaces
We investigate the validity of Thorne’s hoop conjecture in non-axisymmetric spacetimes by examining the formation of apparent horizons numerically. If spaces have a discrete symmetry about one axis, we can specify the boundary conditions to determine an apparent horizon even in non-axisymmetric spaces. We implement, for the first time, the “hoop finder” in non-axisymmetric spaces with a discret...

متن کاملQuantum black holes and effective quantum gravity approaches
One of the most exciting developments in theoretical physics in the last 20 years has been the realization that the scale of quantum gravity could be in the TeV region instead of the usually assumed 1019 GeV. Indeed, the strength of gravity can be affected by the size of potential extra-dimensions [1–4] or the quantum fluctuations of a large hidden sector of particles [5]. A dramatic signal of ...
متن کاملThe entropy of black holes: a primer
After recalling the definition of black holes, and reviewing their energetics and their classical thermodynamics, one expounds the conjecture of Bekenstein, attributing an entropy to black holes, and the calculation by Hawking of the semi-classical radiation spectrum of a black hole, involving a thermal (Planckian) factor. One then discusses the attempts to interpret the black-hole entropy as t...
